The Cyprus Third Age Observatory, committed to promoting an open dialogue with candidates in the upcoming local elections, recently met with Yiannis Armeftis, a candidate for Mayor of Limassol.
The Observatory had a productive discussion with Mr. Armeftis, who actively engaged in understanding the challenges faced by the elderly in Limassol and the potential for enhancing their involvement in the community. He carefully considered the Observatory's recommendations on how local government can address the needs of older adults and promote the creation of age-friendly cities, which included improving accessibility and tailoring services to meet the specific needs of the elderly.
Mr. Demos Antoniou, President of the Observatory, briefed Mr. Armeftis on European projects such as Mentoring Across Borders and Remcread, in which the Observatory is actively involved. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Limassol Municipality to leverage the knowledge and experience of older people and encourage their active participation in the city's economy and society.
In response, Mr. Armeftis shared his comprehensive proposals for promoting active, healthy, and dignified aging, strengthening social cohesion, and utilizing municipal properties to develop affordable housing for vulnerable citizens. He also outlined his ambitious vision for transforming Limassol into a green, sustainable, inclusive city.
This dialogue underscores the crucial role of collaboration between NGOs and local government in developing strategies that enhance the inclusion and active participation of older adults in our society.
